n8n Integration

Automate Timesheet with n8n workflows. Start timers, log and search time entries, send reports, and react to Timesheet events with the Timesheet community node.

Visit WebsitePro plan and above

n8n runs the workflow. Timesheet keeps the hours. With the Timesheet community node, a workflow can log time when a ticket closes, start a timer from a form, or send last month's report to your accountant, on an n8n instance you host yourself.

What you can automate

Timesheet Trigger

  • Starts a workflow when the timer starts, stops, pauses, or resumes, or when a time entry, project, team, todo, tag, or rate is created or updated

Timesheet node

  • Timer: start, stop, pause, and resume the timer, update the running entry, or read its status
  • Time entries: create, update, get, delete, and search them, read statistics, and print a work record as PDF
  • Projects, todos, tags, and rates: create, update, get, delete, and list them, and manage project members
  • Expenses, notes, and breaks: add them to time entries, including receipt and file uploads
  • Documents: create and manage invoices, timesheets, and work records
  • Exports and reports: generate Excel, CSV, or PDF exports and send them by email, or get report data
  • Teams and organizations: manage teams, organizations, and their members
  • Absences and contracts: request, approve, reject, and cancel absences, and manage employment contracts

In the node, time entries are called tasks, as in the Timesheet API.

Ideas to start with

  • Calendar to timesheet: for every new event in a work calendar, create a time entry on the matching project.
  • Monthly report: on the first of each month, email last month's PDF report to your accountant.
  • Ticket done, todo closed: when an issue is resolved in your tracker, close the matching todo in Timesheet.
  • Absences in the team chat: every morning, post pending absence requests to the managers' channel.

Before you start

  • A self-hosted n8n instance, version 1.0 or later.
  • A Timesheet Pro plan or above. The 30-day trial includes it. See plans and pricing.
  • For absences and contracts, an organization on the Business or Enterprise plan, or in its trial.

Install the node

In n8n, open Settings, then Community Nodes, and select Install. Enter @timesheet/n8n-nodes-timesheet and confirm. The node and the Timesheet Trigger then appear in the nodes panel.

On n8n Cloud, only community nodes that n8n has verified can be installed. The Timesheet node is not verified yet, so it runs on self-hosted n8n for now.

Connect it

Create an API key in the Timesheet web app: open Integrations, go to API Keys, and select New API Key. Give it a name, select Generate Key, and copy the key right away, because it is shown only once. In n8n, create a Timesheet API credential and paste the key.

Prefer OAuth2? The node also offers a Timesheet OAuth2 API credential. The setup is described in the node's README.

Good to know

  • The Timesheet Trigger registers its webhook in Timesheet when you activate the workflow, and checks the signature on every delivery, so forged or replayed requests never start a workflow.
  • Timesheet sends create and update events. There are no delete events.
  • Actions such as approving an absence or managing members need manager, owner, or admin rights. The API returns a clear error when an action is not allowed.
  • The node is open source: timesheetIO/n8n-nodes-timesheet on GitHub.
