In short
What is leave management software?
Leave management software replaces the paper form and the spreadsheet: employees send a time-off request, a manager approves or rejects it, and the remaining balance updates for everyone to see. In Timesheet this is part of the Business plan at $20 per user per month, together with time tracking, overtime and working-time rules. You can try it free for 30 days.
Requesting time off takes a minute
An employee picks the type of leave in the app or the web app, sets the first and last day and sends the request. A reason is optional, and a document such as a doctor's note can be attached where one is required.
Leave does not have to be a whole day: for a morning at the dentist, enter a start and end time instead. Each request shows its status, from pending to approved, rejected or cancelled.

Approve or reject in the web app
Managers see the absences of their organization in one list and decide on pending requests there. A notification, by push or email, announces a new request, and the employee is notified of the decision.
Approvals
Approve or reject a pending request. The employee sees the new status in the app.
On behalf of an employee
Enter an absence for someone who called in sick and cannot file it themselves.
History
Look up the absence history of every member of your organization.
PDF export
Export absence records as PDF for your files or your payroll provider.

Leave balances that keep themselves up to date
Each employee has a contract in Timesheet that states their leave entitlement. The balance is calculated from it and updates as absences are approved, so nobody maintains a spreadsheet.
Employees see their own balance in the app and the web app: days entitled, carried over from last year, granted in addition, used, pending and remaining. Carried-over days can have an expiry date. To estimate accrued time off by hand, there is the PTO accrual calculator.
Your absence types and public holidays
Vacation, sick leave, parental leave, training: you decide which absence types your organization uses, and you can add your own.
Public holidays come from a holiday calendar that you assign to each contract. Timesheet ships with calendars for common countries and regions, and you can create your own. A holiday lowers the target hours for that day, so it never looks like missing time.
Leave and working time in one place
Absences sit next to the tracked hours. The contract that sets the leave entitlement also holds the weekly and daily target hours, which Timesheet uses for overtime and flextime balances.
For the attendance side, see time and attendance software. For the daily clock-in, see the employee time tracking app.

What to know before you choose it
Leave management in Timesheet is deliberately simple. The limits:
- It needs the Business plan
- Absences, balances and approvals are part of Business at $20 per user per month, and each employee needs an active contract in Timesheet.
- Approvals happen on the web
- Employees request time off in the app. Managers approve it in the web app.
- No shift planning
- Timesheet records absences. It does not build rosters or find cover for a shift.
- No legal advice
- Country templates give you a starting point, but you set the entitlement and the rules. Timesheet does not replace legal advice.
